PEORIA, IL - In a game that ended up with 115 combined penalty minutes the Louisiana IceGators topped the Peoria Rivermen 5-2 at Carver Arena Saturday night. The loss, Peoria's first regulation defeat since November 3 at Mississippi, drops the Rivermen to 5-3-1 with one game left in the current series with the IceGators Sunday afternoon.
The IceGators scored first at the 10:10 mark of the first period when a faceoff in the Peoria zone was won by Jeremy Boyer to John Daniels who fired it past Rivermen goalie Francois Brassard for the 1-0 lead. Louisiana doubled their lead at 13:47 of the first on a give-and-go from Geordie Wudrick to Daniels for the 2-0 lead.
The IceGators extended their lead at 8:14 of the second as Wudrick one-timed a feed from jake Hauswirth to make it 3-0. The Rivermen got on the board with a poweplay tally at 16:59 of the second as Alec Hagaman buried a feed in the slot from Timmy Hall and Mike Gurtler to make it 3-1. The IceGators got a goal late in the period when a clearing attempt was intercepter=d in the neutral zone by Jeremy Boyer, who walked into the right circle and let go of a slap shot that resulted in a rebound for Dylan Hood, who put it past Brassard with 1.6 seconds left in the second for the 4-1 lead.
The Rivermen got one goal back on the powerplay in the third as Adam Stuart took a feed on the post from Timmy Hall and Dan Bremner at 5:17 to make it 4-2. The game remained scoreless until the final minute when the Rivermen pulled goaltender Kyle Rank, who had started the third period in relief of Brassard, and John Daniels scored his third goal of the game on an empty netter for the final 5-2 score.
The game ended on an auspicious note as with 15 seconds remaining on the clock a melee ensued in front of the IceGators bench that resulted in four ejections, two to each team, as Bremner and Ben Oskroba went off for the Rivermen along with Anthony Pisano and Tyler Barr for the IceGators.
Brassard took the loss for the Rivermen to fall to 1-1-0 after he stopeed 17 of 21 shots in 40 minutes in net. Rank played 19:17 of relief in the third, stopping all six shots he faced.
