Pensacola, Fla. - The Mississippi RiverKings (5-2-0) had a one-goal lead late in the third period, but the Pensacola Ice Flyers (4-2-0) scored twice late in the game to take the first matchup between the two teams in the season 3-2.
After a scoreless first period, the teams traded opportunities in the second. Pensacola found the back of the net just 27 seconds into the middle frame when Joey Holka found the back of the net, lifting the puck over goaltender Peter Di Salvo to give the Ice Flyers a 1-0 lead. But the RiverKings responded minutes later. Mark Pustin rifled a shot from the slot past Matt Zenzola to tie the game at one. Then, with Sam Higgins in the box for the RiverKings for high sticking, Devin Mantha took a Matt Harrington pass and beat Zenzola on a breakaway to give the RiverKings a 2-1 lead with 5:24 left in the second.

RiverKings' captain Leo Thomas was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for spearing with under four minutes remaining in the second and the Ice Flyers' Cole Ruwe took two minutes for roughing. Then, just over two minutes into the third, Ben Rubin and David Segal dropped the gloves in Rubin's first fight of the year.
