Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - It was a great start to the season for the Mississippi RiverKings (1-0-0 2pts) as they kicked off their twenty-fifth season with a two to one win over the newly created Evansville Thunderbolts (0-1-0 0pts) at the Landers Center. It was a game where two of the biggest stars of the night were the players in goal for either team.
The RiverKings would have 20 shots on goal in the first but could not get passed Thunderbolts goalie Tanner Milliron. Evansville on their second shot as a team would get their first goal as an organization from Andrew Darrigo after a steal from Brent Clark.
The second period would almost be a reverse of roles as the Thunderbolts would outshoot the RiverKings but the goals would go for the latter. Brant Sherwood would start the scoring off on a hardworking goal in front of netminder Milliron after a shot from Dillan Fox would bounce free in the crease for Sherwood to clean up giving Fox the assist. The second goal would come off the stick of Todd Hosmer, sending a laser in to the top right corner passed the glove hand of Milliron. Alex Caffi's second period would be a huge one as he made an incredible two on one save to keep the game a one goal lead for the RiverKings.
The third period would be a defensive battle with both goalies standing tall. Milliron would make 12 saves for the ThunderBolts and Caffi would make 9 of his own holding the ThunderBolts off the board and giving the RiverKings the home opening win.
The RiverKings head to Evansville to faceoff with the Thunderbolts again Saturday night at 7:15p.m.(CT). They will look to spoil the newcomers home opener and make it two in a row to start the season.
The RiverKings return to the Landers Center on Friday, November 4 to take on the Macon Mayhem at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call the RiverKings at 662-342-1755 or visit riverkings.com.
