SOUTHAVEN, Miss – The two-time defending CHL Champion Memphis RiverKings are proud to welcome back former goaltender Mark Richards to the organization as assistant coach.

Richards, who helped lead the RiverKings to two consecutive Presidents' Cups over the last two years, returns to the Memphis organization after a brief stint as the head coach of the Tupelo T-Rex.

"I'm happy to be back, and excited about this opportunity," said Richards. "I can't wait until the team hits the ice this Friday for the first time."

Due to league rules, Richards will not be permitted to play and coach at the same time. But Richards, who was to be the inaugural coach of the Southeast Hockey League's Tupelo team before financial issues forced it to cease operations, is focused on the job of coaching.

"I'm just here to offer what expertise I can, and to help Coach Wiley get this team prepared," Richards said.

Richards steps behind the bench after a long and distinguished playing career, that saw him play in several different leagues, including two seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Richards teamed up with current RiverKing Don Parsons and former RiverKings Kahlil Thomas and Coach Doug Shedden in the UHL during the 1999-00 season, helping to lead the Flint Generals to the Colonial Cup.

The two-time defending champion Memphis RiverKings will open their twelfth season of play on Friday, October 17 in Oklahoma City against the Blazers. The home opener for the RiverKings will be Saturday, October 18, as Memphis takes to the ice against the Fort Worth Brahmas at the DeSoto Civic Center. The home opener will include the raising of the 2002-03 Championship banners. 5,000 magnetic schedules will be given away, sponsored by Miller Lite and The Pig (107.5 FM), as well as 3,000 Cellular South CheerStix.

All 64 RiverKings games can be heard on Easy 680 AM, as well as worldwide via SportsJuice.com. Select RiverKings games will also be available through CHL TV, a league-wide video streaming enterprise.
