Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Mississippi plays the two teams above them in the Northeast Division standings this week, traveling for the second time this year to Bossier-Shreveport on Wednesday, November 12th, followed by a two-game home series against Oklahoma City on Friday, November 14th and Saturday, November 15th.
Oklahoma City leads the Northeast Division standings after last weekend's play with an 8-0-2 record for 16 points. Bossier-Shreveport trails the Blazers by four points in second place with a record of 7-2-0 for 14 points, followed by the RiverKings with a mark of 5-4-0 for 10 points and third place in the Northeast standings.
Oklahoma City has won four in a row, but the RiverKings have won their last three straight to start making a move toward the top two in the division standings and a win in Louisiana Wednesday night, plus defense of the home ice on Friday and Saturday could loom large in Mississippi's ascent toward the top of the Northeast standings.
The Past
Mississippi recorded the team's first weekend sweep of Friday-Saturday games last weekend. The RiverKings defeated Rocky Mountain on Friday, November 7th 5-2, and followed that with a 6-2 victory at Wichita on Saturday, November 8th.
In Friday's win, Mississippi received a pair of goals from Brad Bonello, who also added an assist for a three-point night. In addition, Louis Dumont provided a pair of assists and Matt Summers scored a goal and added another assist. Kevin Beech stopped 25 of 27 shots on goal for the victory. Mississippi scored twice on the power play in nine chances and outshot the Rage 32-27.
On Saturday, the RiverKings broke open a 1-1 intermission tie with three goals in the second period and two more in the third period for their third straight win. This time, Brad Bonello (two goals, one assist) was joined by Bobby Chaumont with a three-point night (two goals, one assist). Joining them were Louis Dumont (one goal, two assists), and Garrett Larson (three assists) on the scoreboard, and Jeff Nelson chipped in with a pair of helpers for the RiverKings. Goalie Kevin Beech (5-3-0) stopped 19 of 21 shots on goal for his third straight victory.
The RiverKings had another successful night on the power play with a 3-for-7 effort, their second straight three-goal performance on the power play, while stopping the Thunder all but once in five extra man chances (1-for-5). Mississippi outshot Wichita 29-21 for the game.
The Present
The next game for the RiverKings will be Wednesday night, November 12th, when Mississippi meets Bossier-Shreveport at the Century Tel Center in Bossier City, Louisiana. This will be the third time the Mudbugs and RiverKings have met in the regular season, with Bossier-Shreveport winning each of the two previous games by scores of 6-2.
Jeff Nelson has two assists to lead the scoring for the RiverKings against Bossier-Shreveport, while Louis Dumont, Stephen Margeson, Dallas Costanzo, and Bobby Chaumont have each scored goals against the Mudbugs. Dumont's goal against Bossier came shorthanded, while Margeson and Costanzo have scored on the power play. Both Mississippi goaltenders have played against the Mudbugs this season, as both Tyler Sims and Kevin Beech were charged with six goals each in their lone appearances this year.
The Future
Following the Wednesday night game in Louisiana, the RiverKings will return home to play the Oklahoma City Blazers in a pair of games at the DeSoto Civic Center on Friday, November 14th, and again Saturday, November 15th. Game time both nights will be 7:05 PM.
Mississippi defeated Oklahoma City 3-2 in a shootout at the Ford Center in the only previous matchup between the teams on Friday, October 24th. Louis Dumont's goal in the shootout became the game-winning goal of the contest. Dumont also added an assist in the victory, while Jeff Alcombrack and Bobby Chaumont also scored goals. Kevin Beech stopped 36 of 38 shots on goal for the RiverKings, who scored once in ten power play chances.
