Rocky Mountain Rage Weekly Update

November 10, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Nov. 7 @ Mississippi RiverKings, 5-2 Loss - A disastrous first five minutes put the Rage behind the eight ball early as the 'Kings scored twice in the opening 4:36. Trailing, 4-0, after two periods, the line of Nathan O'Nabigon, Simon Watson, and Scott Wray generated both goals for Rocky Mountain in the third, but the game was already out of reach.

Nov. 8 @ Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, 3-2 Shootout Loss - The Rage built a 2-0 lead behind goals from Colt King and Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn as the club scored the first goal in a game for only the third time this season. The Mudbugs' power play, which was ranked first across the league coming into the weekend, led directly to goals late in the second and mid-way through the third to force overtime and eventually a shootout. Rocky Mountain was outscored, 3-2, in the tie-breaker but still picked up its first point of the year on the road.

SOUVENIR PUCK

Nathan O'Nabigon has a new puck to display on his mantle after scoring his first career goal on Friday at Mississippi. His linemate Scott Wray fished the puck out of the net after O'Nabigon fired a wrist shot top shelf early in the third period. The rookie from Longlac, Ontario, is accustomed to being part of winning hockey teams having won a Memorial Cup in 2002-03 with the Kitchener Rangers. Then, rather than turning pro after his junior days were done, he decided to attend the University of New Brunswick where he both earned a degree in business finance and won a national championship.

CULLATON BECOMES ALL-TIME SCORING LEADER

With an assist on Colt King's goal on Saturday, Brent Cullaton became the Rage's all-time points leader. The helper gives him 97 points (21g-76a) in a Rocky Mountain sweater, one more than his former teammate Trevor Weisgerber (35g-61a). Cullaton has played in just 65 games for the Rage, whereas Weisgerber suited up in 101 contests before getting traded to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees during the off-season.

IRON MEN SLOWED BY INJURIES

Daymen Rycroft and Simon Watson were one of five players last season who played all 64 regular season games for the Rage, but both have been slowed by injuries during the first month of this season. Rycroft missed both games this past weekend, and Watson has been hampered by injury since training camp. The latter played at less than 100% in the team's first four games of the year, but then sat out three games before returning at Mississippi to register his first two points of the season. The other iron men from last season included Tyler Butler, Clay Plume, and Weisgerber. Plume showed a chink in his iron man armor when he blew out his knee over the summer after going three straight campaigns without missing a single contest.

RAGE TACKLE THE SOUTHWEST

Rocky Mountain's four-game road trip concludes this Friday and Saturday with games against a pair of Southwest Division foes, the New Mexico Scorpions and Odessa Jackalopes. Both games figure to be a challenge. The Rage have never won a game in New Mexico, going 0-6-0 over two seasons at the Santa Ana Star Center. And the Jackalopes feature the league's top offense, which has them positioned atop the Southwest with a record of 7-2-1 and 15 points. At least the division doesn't charge baggage fees...
