Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings (20-9-6) overcame a two-goal deficit in the first 20 minutes as they won their fifth straight game with a 4-3 victory over the Huntsville Havoc (18-15-2) on Saturday night on Concorde Career College Ice at Landers Center.
The Havoc jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first. John McGinnis put the Havoc on top with a shot that banked off the back of goaltender Garrett Sheehan just 3:14 into the game to give Huntsville a 1-0 lead. Later in the second, Jeremy Beirnes scooped up a rebound and buried it past Sheehan to give the Havoc a 2-0 lead after the first.
In the second, the RiverKings battled back. Matt Harrington ripped a shot that trickled through the legs of Ryan de Melo on the power play to bring the RiverKings within one. Then, with just under 2:30 left in the second, Todd Hosmer tied the game at two with his eighth point in four games with the RiverKings as the teams entered the third tied.
The RiverKings took their first lead of the night 12:05 into the final frame. Brandon Vossberg fired a shot from the point and Ryan Marcuz collected the rebound and slid it past de Melo to give the RiverKings a 3-2 lead.
But Huntsville tied the game just 39 seconds later. Matt Robertson took a pass inside of the zone and beat Sheehan over his glove to tie it at three.
With 4:03 left in regulation, the RiverKings retook the lead. Cullen Bradshaw forced a turnover in the Havoc zone and beat de Melo to give the RiverKings a 4-3 lead.
Sheehan (5-5-4) stopped 15 of 18 shots against in the win. De Melo (0-1-0) stopped 32 of 36 shots against in the loss.
The RiverKings were 1-3 with the power play tonight, while the Havoc were held scoreless on five opportunities with the man-advantage.
After the game, the RiverKings auctioned off their Pink jerseys for the RiverKings ReachOut Fund at the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. The auctioned raised $11,000 for non-profit efforts in the Mid-South.
