Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings, the longest continually operating professional sports franchise in the greater Memphis area, and Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Derek Landmesser have announced today that they have acquired forward Benjamin Rubin from the Louisiana IceGators in exchange for goaltender Adam Courchaine.
Rubin, 26, will begin his fifth professional season, and his second season as a pro in North America, in 2015-16. For the IceGators in 2014-15, the Montreal, Quebec native posted 30 points (12g, 18a) in 42 games. He added two points (1g, 1a) in five playoff games for Louisiana. Prior to returning to North America, the 6-foot-2, 203-pound winger played three seasons of pro hockey in France, where he had 89 points (39g, 50a) in 72 games.
"Ben is a big power forward who is not afraid to get in the dirty areas to score goals," said Landmesser. "His size and skill will be a nice addition to our lineup."
Rubin played his junior hockey from 2006 to 2010 in three leagues: QMJHL, QJAHL, and AJHL. He played in 85 games for three teams, the Quebec Ramparts, Gatineau Olympiques and Monteal Juniors, in the QMJHL.
Courchaine, 26, joins Louisiana after being one half of the top goalie tandem in the SPHL in 2014-15 with the RiverKings. In 31 games, Courchaine went 14-13-2 with a 2.49 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage. After losing his first nine decisions to start the season, he won 14 of his last 20 decisions to end the regular season. He was honored as SPHL Player of the Week in early March.
"I want to thank Adam for everything he did for us last season and want to wish him all the best," said Landmesser.
The Mississippi RiverKings are proud to be the longest, continually operating sports franchise in the Memphis area, as they begin their 24th season in 2015. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, October 23 at the Landers Center. Groups of 15 or more who purchase a group for that night will receive an identical group package to any other regular season game for free.
