Mississippi RiverKings News Release
LAFAYETTE, La. - The Mississippi RiverKings (11-13-2) opened a two-goal lead, but then the Louisiana IceGators (13-10-3) scored the next five goals and won, 5-2, Wednesday night at the Cajundome in Louisiana. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the RiverKings over the IceGators.
Mississippi started strong once again in the Cajundome. Devin Mantha gave the RiverKings a 1-0 lead at 3:26 of the first when he tipped a point shot from Mike Grace. Grace and Linden Bahm got the assists on Mantha's sixth goal of the season. The RiverKings followed that up by taking a two-goal lead just a few minutes later. Matt Whitehead gained the offensive zone up the middle and dropped a pass to Sean Jones, who was trailing him. Jones snapped it past Marco De Filippo to give the RiverKings a 2-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season, all coming in three games at the Cajundome.
From there the IceGators turned the tables of the RiverKings. They would pick up seven of the final eight shots of the period and rally to even the game at two before the intermission. Tyler Barr started the scoring with his first goal of the year after he picked up a loose puck at the right circle and shot it past Adam Courchaine at 12:11. Just 44 seconds later Jake Hauswirth started a give-and-go with Jeremy Boyer. The return pass to Hauswirth got him alone in front of the net and he scored at 12:55, making it 2-2.
Louisiana jumped ahead in the opening moments of the second period. Chris Wilson made a move at the right circle and went to the left circle before shooting back across his body. The puck hit the right post and the left post, but just barely grazed the net and was called a good goal 27 seconds into the period. Less than a minute later Bret Peppler finished off a rebound at 1:19 to put the IceGators up 4-2, which forced Courchaine from the game. He allowed four goals on 10 shots and was replaced by Peter Di Salvo.
The IceGators finished the scoring with a Barr power-play goal at 10:57 of the third period and the IceGators won it, 5-2.
