Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings will feature the works of The Samaritans organization and Entergy's "Power To Care" fund as the M.V.P. (Money-Volunteers-Publicity) Nonprofit of the Night on January 22, when the RiverKings battle the Missouri Mavericks at 7:05 p.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.
The Samaritans organization serves the people of Horn Lake and Southaven who are disabled, elderly and on fixed income, persons who are working and financially challenged, and families whose incomes are at or below Mississippi guidelines for poverty, through a wide range of services from a food pantry to help with utilities.
"From the basics of keeping people from being hungry, naked, sick, and cold to getting them motivated and prepared to find jobs, the Samaritans impact the lives of individuals and families who receive assistance in so many ways," Samaritans Executive Director Jim Glass said. "Perhaps, among the greatest work we do is to inspire people to believe God loves them and they are of immeasurable value."
Entergy Regional Customer Service Manager Pat Nelson said the Samaritans do a great job of helping a portion of the population that often has no voice and no resources to survive and succeed.
"The Samaritans are the prime distributor of the Power To Care Fund in DeSoto County," Nelson said. "This fund distributes much-needed funds to the elderly and handicapped to help pay a portion of their utilities year-round, and in the present distressed economic conditions, winter-time is a critical time of need for the elderly and handicapped."
The Samaritans/Power to Care fund will receive a donations total of around $5,000 from the RiverKings and parent nonprofit grantor, the Maddox Foundation, which Entergy will match.
"Entergy's stockholders will match the $15 purchase price for each ticket plus the RiverKings and Maddox matches of $8 each, to bring in $32 in cash back to the Samaritans/Power To Care Fund for each $15 ticket purchased," Nelson said. "Hopefully we'll go even higher with last minute calls for tickets. We are really excited about bringing in $10,000 for the Power to Care fund!"
The Samaritans help people in as many areas as possible, whether that means getting people prescriptions, referring them to a local dental clinic that charges Samaritans participants just $10 for services, or helping out with food.
"It's easy for people to help," Glass said. "They can volunteer in the food pantry, as receptionist, in the clothes closet, as a social worker or interviewer of recipients, make occasional food pick-ups, help with yard work or maintenance, serve on our board of directors, do fundraisers or assist in fundraisers, give money, or pray!"
Additionally, The Samaritans will commemorate the work of the Hugh Dancy family on behalf of The Samaritans during the ceremonial puck drop. Members of the Dancy family will be on hand will be on hand to perform the pre-game ritual. The late Mr. Hugh Dancy donated the land in Horn Lake where the new Samaritans building was built.
Upcoming Samaritans events include their Walk-Run-Scoot-a-thon, Annual Tennis Tournament, Dollar Day Yard Sale, and Food Drives through Rotary, Kroger and United Way.
