'Dogs Acquire Goaltender Doug Groenestege

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Arizona Sundogs Head Coach and General Manager Marco Pietroniro announced today the team has acquired goaltender Doug Groenestege (pronounced GRUHN-uh-stej) from the Missouri Mavericks. The acquisition of Groenestege completes an October 20 deal that sent forward Karl Sellan to the expansion club. In addition, the team has waived netminder Sergey Klimkovich.

Groenestege, 25, recorded an 8-5-1 record, two shutouts, a 3.42 goals against average (GAA) and a.887 save percentage (SV%) in 17 games with the Mavericks this season.

The Stratford, Ontario, native was named Oakley/CHL Goaltender of the Week earlier this season after posting back-to-back wins against the Wichita Thunder in late-October. In two contests against the Thunder, Groenestege stopped 46 of 47 shots for a 0.5 GAA and a.979 SV%.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound backstop was a finalist for the CHL's Most Outstanding Goaltender award in 2008-09 while with the Oklahoma City Blazers, finishing with a pair of shutouts, a 24-6-4 record and a league-leading 2.10 GAA. His.922 SV% ranked third among league netminders.

The fifth-year pro was twice named Oakley/CHL Goaltender of the Week last season and was named CHL Goaltender of the Month for November.

Klimkovich, 23, appeared in two games for the Sundogs this season, tallying 93:46 of playing time, a 0-1-0 record, 3.20 GAA and.865 SV% allowing five goals on 37 shots.
