RiverKings re-sign Wenzel
September 13, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League announced today that the team has re-signed winger Sheldon Wenzel for the 2007-2008 season. Wenzel will be entering his third pro season and his third with the RiverKings. He is the 19th player signed by the RiverKings for the upcoming season which begins with the opening of training camp on October 8 followed by the season opener versus Bossier-Shreveport at the DCC on October 19.
Wenzel, 23, had his 2006-007 season shortened to 21 games because of injury and is hungry to perform this season.
"I am looking to rebound after missing much of last season," Wenzel said. "That was really the first time in my career that I had missed games because of an injury. That has inspired me to work out hard this summer to prepare for the season."
The Brooks, Alberta native scored two goals, had two assists and totaled 82 penalty minutes in those 21 games last season. His two-season RiverKings totals are: four goals; six assists; and 250 PIM in 57 games. Prior to joining the RiverKings via trade during his rookie year in 2005-2006, the 6-foot-1, 220 pound forward played the first 20 games of his professional career with the Austin Ice Bats.
"We had good run last season," Wenzel said. "This season, we will be looking to take that next step."
Wenzel played junior hockey with the Brooks Bandits (AJHL) and the Lewiston MAINEiacs (QMJHL) before turning pro in 2004.
