Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League announced today that the team has hired Nikolai Busko as its Director of Broadcasting and Director of Media Relations. Busko replaces Jim Erickson who is leaving to be the broadcaster for the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League.
Busko's responsibilities will include broadcasting all of the team's games, coordinating the team's media coverage and writing and disseminating the majority of the team's news releases.
"We are excited about Nik coming to the RiverKings," RiverKings Director of Business Operations Dave Mattice said. "He is young and energetic and sounded great on his demo. He quickly got to the top of the pack of resumes I had. Although he has big shoes to fill with Jim's departure, I am sure he will fit into the RiverKings family just fine."
Busko broadcast hockey games for the Tri-City Storm of the USHL in 2005-2006 and the United States Military Academy in 2004-2005. The Newburgh, NY native has also worked as a news director, as well as a news and sports anchor at radio stations in New York and Nebraska since graduating from the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca (NY) College in 2003.
"I need to thank Dave Mattice for giving me a call last week to tell me Jim was on his way to Iowa," Busko said. "Dave informed me of the opening just hours after I arrived in Maine last Friday to begin working for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Lewiston MAINEiacs."
Busko had previously accepted the broadcasting job with the MAINEiacs before the RiverKings opportunity came about. He is planning to work the MAINEiacs' first five games before heading to Southaven.
"As much as I have enjoyed my brief time in Lewiston, I'm really looking forward to what's ahead for me in Mississippi," Busko said. "It's my first job in professional hockey and I can't wait to go to work."
Busko is expected to join the RiverKings' staff by October 1.
Busko's debut on the air for the RiverKings will be the first of the two preseason games versus the Florida Everblades of the ECHL in Florida on October 12. KWAM, the Big 990, will serve as the RiverKings' flagship radio station this season and will carry the two preseason games, all 64 regular season games and any post season action.
