Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Mississippi RiverKings (29-18-2) rolled past the Fayetteville FireAntz (20-22-7), 4-1, Friday night in their first trip to the Crown Coliseum this season.
The RiverKings dominated the first period and came away with a 1-0 lead after Leo Thomas struck for the game's first goal late in the period. Ryan Marcuz intercepted a clearing pass at the blue line then skated to the right circle. He sent a pass towards Justin Gvora in the slot, but it was tipped and Thomas followed up to fire it in for his 19th goal of the season at 16:52.
Mississippi took a two-goal lead early in the second period. Devin Mantha won a neutral zone faceoff and raced down the right wing, carrying the puck into the offensive zone. He cut in front and took a shot, which Andrew Flemming stopped, but Sean Jones followed up on the rebound to make it 2-0 at 1:49. After both teams came up empty on power plays the FireAntz pulled within one when Josh McQuade roofed a shot over the shoulder of Peter Di Salvo from the left circle at 16:34.
The RiverKings reclaimed their two-goal lead early in the third period. After sustained pressure in the offensive zone Mantha dropped a pass off to Mike Hayward at the point. He teed up a one-timer and it was tipped by Matt Harrington to give the RiverKings a 3-1 lead at 1:43 of the third. The RiverKings iced it away when Matt Whitehead slapped a shot from the slot on what looked like a broken 2-on-1 with Linden Bahm. Whitehead sent a pass for Bahm, but it deflected back towards the high slot, where Whitehead pounced for his team-leading 20th goal.
Notes: Matt Whitehead became the first RiverKings player with 20 goals this season. Last year he was one of two players with 20 goals for the RiverKings. He finished with 22 while Todd Hosmer had 37... Tonight's win ensures the RiverKings a winning road record for the second straight season... Matt Harrington finished with a goal and assist for his first multi-point game since Dec. 26, although tonight was just his fifth game with the RiverKings since then.
The RiverKings are back home for a weekend set with the Peoria Rivermen Friday, Mar. 20 and Saturday Mar. 21. March 20 is Conservation Night presented by Christian Brothers University.
