Mississippi RiverKings News Release
MEMPHIS- AutoZone Park was full of smiling faces when Schnuck's presented the 14th Annual Big Scoop Ice Cream Festival benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis. Mississippi RiverKings mascot Sheldon was right in the midst, meeting and greeting families alongside other local personalities and vendors.
This year's Big Scoop featured vendor booths with something for everyone and a variety of games and prizes for all children big and small. Patrons enjoyed live music and performances by The Summers band and the Watoto de Afrika Dance Group, participated in an ice cream feeding contest, and strolled the concourse of the park while sampling Blue Bell Ice Cream, Starbucks, Smoothie King, and more.
Sheldon, along with other costumed characters, provided a friendly face among the crowd, especially for RiverKings fans like Brian Shainberg. "I've been a fan from the very beginning," Shainberg said after giving Sheldon a big high-five.
Caron Byrd, executive director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis, was also excited to have the RiverKings present at such an important community event.
"We wanted to involve the community, and I think it's a great opportunity to show how we all work together for great causes. The RiverKings have always been willing to support what the Ronald McDonald House does for kids and the families. And we just love having them as part of this event!"
Ronald McDonald House is a "home-away-from-home" for families who are in Memphis while their child is receiving treatment for cancer or another catastrophic illness at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. All families stay completely free of charge.
During the RiverKings' regular season, which runs from October through March, the team visits the residents of the House, as well as hosts the families at games and provides fundraisers to help offset daily needs and operations of the House.
