Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Derek Landmesser announced today the captains for the 2014-15 season. Leo Thomas will resume his role as captain for the second straight season. Matt Whitehead and Andrew Randazzo will serve as assistant captains.
Thomas, 32, was named RiverKings captain prior to the 2013-14 season. He is the second captain for the RiverKings since the team joined the SPHL prior to the 2011-12 season.
"Leo is a proven winner and leads by example on and off the ice," Landmesser said. "He will do whatever it takes to win and to put the team first."
Thomas produced 40 points (17g, 23a), which was fourth on the team and his plus-21 rating was the best mark on the team last season.
Whitehead joins the leadership group as an assistant captain this season. The 29-year-old is the longest tenured RiverKing on the team, having been with the organization since the 2011-12 season.
"'Whitee' is a very respected player both in our locker room and throughout the league," Landmesser said.
During his time with the RiverKings, Whitehead has produced better than a point per game, collecting 147 points in 139 games. He scored 55 points (22g, 33a) in 55 games last season and was a plus-19, second on the team.
Randazzo, 24, returns to the RiverKings for his third season and will also serve as an assistant captain. The defenseman was second on the team with 30 assists and led the team with 22 power-play points (4g, 18a).
"'Rando' has earned the respect of his peers and our staff," Landmesser said. "He is ready to take on more responsibility as a leader in our room."
The RiverKings open their 2014-15 quest for the President's Cup on October 24 and 25 at the Landers Center in Southaven, Miss.
