RiverKings and AFSP Battle Suicide

Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi RiverKings and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are joining forces on the ice to battle suicide Friday, January 18 against the Mississippi Surge at the Landers Center in Southaven. The AFSP will also be recognized as the non-profit MVP (Money-Volunteers-Publicity) of the night.

This marks the fifth year The RiverKings and the AFSP have partnered with great success in garnering suicide awareness. Tonia Howell, Public Relations Committee Chair of the Mid-South AFSP, wants to reach as many families as possible and lend them a helping hand.

"Working to assist survivors and raising awareness for prevention initiatives allows our chapter members to make some meaning out of an otherwise meaningless experience - the tragic loss of a loved one to suicide," Howell said. "Reaching out to others with compassion helps in everyone's journey of healing."

The AFSP is selling tickets to raise funds for the foundation and to support suicide prevention in the Mid-South. Ten dollars of every ticket sold and used will directly benefit the AFSP.

The Memphis/Mid-South Chapter of the AFSP was founded two years ago and has expanded to hold successful "Out of the Darkness Community Walks" to educate the local community and to raise awareness of suicide prevention. AFSP is the leading national not-for-profit organization relating specifically to suicide prevention. The Mid-South Chapter serves West Tennessee, East Arkansas, and Northwest Mississippi. For more information on AFSP, call 901-652-0312 or visit their website at www.afsp.org

The RiverKings take on the Knoxville Ice Bears in Knoxville tomorrow, December, 21 at 6:35 p.m. Be sure to keep up with the RiverKings on Facebook (facebook.com/mississippiriverkings) and Twitter (twitter.com/riverkings).

The Mississippi RiverKings are supported by their community partners, season ticket holders, fans, and by program-related investments of the Maddox Foundation, an independent private foundation based in Hernando, Miss.
