Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - The Rochester Raging Rhinos (2-1-1, 7 points) defeated the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-2-1, 7 points), 2-1, on a 90th minute goal at Frontier Field in front of 9,063 fans. The Riverhounds have never won in Rochester.
The Rhinos took advantage of a double-yellow card ejection to Hounds defender David Wright and notched the game winner at the end of the game when Scott Schweitzer launched a throw in down the field to the six-yard mark. Veteran midfielder Lenin Steenkamp drove the ball past Riverhounds goalkeeper Randy Dedini for the win.
Although Riverhounds forward Thiago Martins had three shots on goal between the 12th and 18th minutes, the Rhinos struck first. In the 25th minute Steenkamp crossed the ball across the penalty box. Forward Viktor Paco picked up the pass with his head and drove the ball past Dedini for a 1-0 lead.
Martins, the league's leading scorer, scored the equalizer for the Riverhounds in the 50th minute when he was part of a three-on-three attack in front of the Rhinos' goal. Aleksey Korol fed Martins a through ball, which he fired past Rhinos goalkeeper Billy Andracki. Korol, who immigrated to the Rochester area after leaving the Ukraine, picked up his first point of the season with the assist.
"Aleksey should really be credited with that goal," Martins said. "He did all the work. He made a great play down the field. I was just happy to finish."
In the 63rd minute, defender David Wright received his second yellow card of the game and was ejected. He had been injured on the preceding play; however, the center official presented the yellow card to him after he picked himself up off the pitch. The ejection gave the Rhinos a man advantage for the remainder of the game.
In a game marked with physical play from the opening whistle, both teams were assessed 19 fouls with seven yellow cards issued - four for Pittsburgh and three for Rochester.
Rochester out shot Pittsburgh 12 to 9.
The Hounds return home to Bethel Park Stadium May 26 for the second half of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying against the Richmond Kickers. Game time is 3 p.m. Following the game, fans are invited to stay for an Old Fashioned Memorial Day picnic on the field. In addition to great food and the players returning to participate, games and activities will be available for all ages.
