Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh RIVERHOUNDS® will meet D.C. United of Major League Soccer in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at 7:30 p.m. at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md., on July 16. The pairing will be announced by U.S. Soccer today. Ticket information will be announced later.

The Riverhounds have not played D.C. United but have a strong connection to the team. Former Hounds general manager and Bridgeville, Pa., native Dave Kasper is D.C.'s technical director. He is in his second season with the team after leaving the Riverhounds in January 2001 for the New England Revolution..

Riverhounds head coach Tim Carter has anticipated an MLS opponent. "We knew that we would eventually have to face an MLS team if we advanced in the Open Cup," he said. "We are looking forward to facing D.C. on the 16th."

During the Riverhounds 2001 run to the Open Cup quarterfinals, the team knocked off the Colorado Rapids at Bethel Park Stadium before meeting another A-League team, El Paso, in the Round of 16.

Eight games take place in the third round and are comprised of pairings including eight A-League, two MLS and six amateur or Pro Select League teams. The third-round matches are being grouped geographically to accommodate travel..

HOUNDS BATTLE IMPACT THIS WEEKEND

The Riverhounds (3-4-2, 11 points) depart Thursday for Montreal where they meet the Impact in a two-game, home and home series Friday and Sunday. Friday's match at Claude Robillard Stadium will be televised live at 8 p.m. on Fox Sports World.

The Impact (5-2-2, 17 points) shares first place in the Northeast Division with Rochester and are coming off a weekend where they split games with Toronto. They defeated Toronto on Friday, 1-0, and dropped the game Sunday by the same score.

The Riverhounds are coming off a 2-0 loss to Rochester at Frontier Field on Saturday and are in a 226-minute scoring drought. Montreal has only given up four goals in nine games.

The teams complete the home-and-home series Sunday at 6:05 p.m. at Bethel Park Stadium. The Sunday match will be broadcast live on Pittsburgh Fox Sports Radio 970.

WATCH THE GAME LIVE!!!

Fans are invited to head to the Riverhounds post-game party headquarters, The Roxy Café, at South Hills Village Mall to watch the game live on Fox Sports World. The Kiss FM 96.1 Riverhounds Kicking Machine will be available from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Riverhounds players not traveling to Canada along with assistant coach Ryan Lakin will be on hand at the Roxy throughout the game to provide analysis and insight. Special drink specials will also be available at the bar.

LINEUP NOTES

Three Riverhounds players will not be in the line up on Friday against the Impact. Defenders Ricardo Iribarren and Eric Ongao and forward Aleksey Korol cannot make the trip due to immigration factors. Iribarren and Korol are awaiting their green cards and are advised to stay in the United States. Ongao's current visa status allows him only the opportunity to work in the United States.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Defender David Wright was named to the A-League Team of the Week for the second time this season. Wright received the honor after his solid play in the team's 0-0 tie against Charleston on June 4.

NEW DEFENDER JOINS THE FOLD

Defender Tim Glowienka has signed with the Riverhounds. The rookie out of the University of South Carolina was the team's first round draft pick in the A-League College Draft. However, he was also signed by the NY/NJ MetroStars and signed with them in March. The MetroStars released him last week. The Oak Ridge, Tenn., was an All-South player who helped anchor the defense. He joins fellow Gamecocks midfielder Joey Worthen and goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer on the Riverhounds.
