RiverHawks Win Exhibition Opener

May 8, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release

LOVES PARK, Ill. - One of the Rockford RiverHawks' key offseason acquisitions keyed their win in Tuesday's spring-training opener.

Leadoff hitter Brandon Anderson had three hits, two steals and drove in the go-ahead run as the RiverHawks beat Windy City, 9-7, in the first game of an exhibition doubleheader at RiverHawks Stadium.

Anderson was 3-for-4 with a walk and scored three runs. He broke a 6-6 tie with a RBI double to left field off reliever Mike Recchia during Rockford's three-run sixth inning. The center fielder, who led the Frontier League in stolen bases last season, joined the RiverHawks last fall as a player to be named later to complete a trade made with the ThunderBolts in August 2011.

Windy City scored four runs in the first inning - two on a Bruce Alter home run to right field - and led, 6-2, after 3½ innings. Matt Greener led off the Rockford fourth with a home run to left and the RiverHawks tied the game with a three-run rally in the fifth.

Rockton native Brett Scarpetta pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win. Recchia took the loss.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league that will play its 20th season in 2012. The RiverHawks open their 11th season on May 18 at River City. The home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. May 25 against Lake Erie. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
