Rockford RiverHawks News Release

LOVES PARK, Ill. - One of the Rockford RiverHawks' key offseason acquisitions keyed their win in Tuesday's spring-training opener.

Leadoff hitter Brandon Anderson had three hits, two steals and drove in the go-ahead run as the RiverHawks beat Windy City, 9-7, in the first game of an exhibition doubleheader at RiverHawks Stadium.

Anderson was 3-for-4 with a walk and scored three runs. He broke a 6-6 tie with a RBI double to left field off reliever Mike Recchia during Rockford's three-run sixth inning. The center fielder, who led the Frontier League in stolen bases last season, joined the RiverHawks last fall as a player to be named later to complete a trade made with the ThunderBolts in August 2011.

Windy City scored four runs in the first inning - two on a Bruce Alter home run to right field - and led, 6-2, after 3? innings. Matt Greener led off the Rockford fourth with a home run to left and the RiverHawks tied the game with a three-run rally in the fifth.

Rockton native Brett Scarpetta pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win. Recchia took the loss.

In game two, the ThunderBolts picked up a 5-0 win as their pitching took control.

Windy City's Ricky Szeligo started the game and struck out six RiverHawks' batters on his way to three perfect innings of work. Mike Scudero added a perfect fourth, followed by Nelson Curry, who gave up walks to Jeremy Richter and Greg Van Horn in the fifth, but allowed no hits.

The ThunderBolts took the lead with an RBI sacrifice fly from Travis Weaver in the second inning and the "˜Bolts added two more in the third off of back-to-back-to-back hits from Louis Templeton, Brandon Decker and Mike Dobbs.

The RiverHawks broke up the no-hitter bid in the bottom of the sixth when Dave Worthington lead off with a single to center. Unfortunately, the hit was followed by a strike out, a pop out in foul ground and another strike out.

Van Horn singled with two outs in the eighth, but the game ended when RJ Harris was picked off of second base by Windy City catcher Brandon Pearl.

The RiverHawks started Kyle Kriech in game two, but took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits through 3.2 innings.

Windy City starter Ricky Szeligo got the win.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league that will play its 20th season in 2012. The RiverHawks open their 11th season on May 18 at River City. The home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. May 25 against Lake Erie. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
