LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks' pitching staff continues to shape up as last year's ace, lefty Alex Szymanski, has signed a contract extension for 2012.

Szymanski, 24, will pitch his third season in professional baseball and second with the RiverHawks. After one season in Kalamazoo, the lefty became the staff ace for manager Rich Austin's team a year ago.

"Alex did a great job for us last year", said Austin. "We're real excited to have him back this season and we hope he can continue to have the same kind of success this season," Austin added.

Last season, Szymanski appeared in 16 games, starting 15. He compiled an an ERA of 4.09 in 92.1 innings pitched. Szymanski also struck out 86 batters, which ranked eighth in the league.

In two seasons, Szymanski has amassed a 3.77 ERA and 123 srtikeouts.
