MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have announced the signing of former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Daniel Calhoun. Calhoun is a 6'3, 220 left-handed starting pitcher entering his fourth year of professional baseball.
In 2009 while pitching at Murray State Calhoun was named an All-American by CollegeBaseballInsider.com, Collegiate Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assoc. and Ping. Calhoun went 11-3 with a 2.32 era while leading the nation in the least number of walks per nine innings pitched.
Calhoun was drafted in the 29th round of the major league draft and had 12 appearances, including 6 starts for the Batavia Muckdogs, posting a 1.86 era, striking out 42 and walking just 6 in 48 innings. He was promoted to Quad Cities in 2010 where he posted a perfect 10-0 record with a 3.75 era. Calhoun's 2011 season was split between Single A Palm Beach and Double A Springfield. In 43 combined appearances he carried a 3.99 era, striking out 46 and walking only 15 in 67 2/3 innings.
Miners manager Mike Pinto said, "The reports I have from the Cardinals organization is that he is extremely competitive on the mound and is a supreme strike thrower. There was a lot of interest by other teams in Daniel and we are excited that he wanted to play in Southern Illinois."
Opening Day is Friday, May 18. For the latest news and updates about the Miners and upcoming events at Rent One Park, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
