Rockford RiverHawks News Release
JOLIET, Ill. - Bear Bay and Griffin Bailey combined on a six-hitter on Monday as the Joliet JackHammers beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 4-2, at Silver Cross Field.
Bay had a shutout until the ninth inning, but Bailey closed the game when the RiverHawks left the tying runs on base in the ninth.
Bay (1-2) retired 11 straight RiverHawks from the third through sixth innings. In the ninth, Rich Austin led off with a walk and Jason James doubled him home. Bailey relieved Bay, and although an error and a Jake Eigsti RBI single put the tying runs on the corners with one out, the right-hander retired the next two hitters for his first save.
Bay had a lead the work with from the second inning on. Jon Nelson led off the second with a home run to left field. Freddie Thon singled in a two-out run in the fifth and Kevin Rios hit a two-out, two-run homer to left in the seventh.
Rockford starter Kyle Wright (2-1) lasted 6 2/3 innings and gave up 10 hits for just the second time in his two seasons with the RiverHawks.
The series continues at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday.
