Northern League Names Player and Pitcher of the Week

Second baseman Jacob Blackwood of the Kansas City T-Bones was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks pitcher Scott Fogelson received the Northern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the period ending May 30th , 2010.

Blackwood, who leads the league with 12 RBI and is tied for the league lead with four home runs, batted .357 (15-for-42) with eight runs scored, five doubles, and a stolen base over the first 10 games of the season. He did the bulk of his damage over a seven game span from May 21st -27th when he batted .500 (13-for-26) with five doubles, three home runs and nine RBI.

The 6-0, 210-pounder, is playing his fifth season of professional baseball and second with the T-Bones. He first signed with Kansas City on June 25th , 2009 and has already matched his home run output from 63 games played last year. With the T-Bones in '09, he batted .288 with four home runs and 38 RBI. Changing positions this season with Kansas City, he has started every game at second base despite having played over 300 of his previous 373 games at third base.

Blackwood was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft and played parts of four seasons in their organization (he was also drafted in the 40th round of the 2005 draft by the New York Mets, but did not sign). The 24-year-old right-hander batted .300 in his first professional season with Jamestown (NY-Penn League). Blackwood played collegiately at Maple Woods Community College (Kansas City, MO).

Fogelson, who is playing his second season with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, is yet to allow a run in the 2010 season. After his first two starts in '10, he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA yielding only six hits over 14 innings of work. On his way to being named Northern League Pitcher of the Week for the span ending May 30th , he only walked two while striking out a league-leading 15 batters. In each of his starts, he hurled seven shutout innings yielding only three hits.

Originally signed by the RedHawks on February 3rd , 2009, the 6-2 195-pound lefty pitched the entire '09 season for F-M. He went 3-2 with a 3.66 ERA, starting 15 games for the 'Hawks, including making two appearances in the playoffs for the eventual champions. Including his last regular season start of '09, he has now thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings.

The five-year veteran played collegiately at Emporia State University (Emporia, KS) and began his professional career in 2005 with the Northern League after signing with Lincoln as a non-drafted free agent. Midway through his rookie season with the Saltdogs, his contract was purchased by the San Diego Padres organization. Over his career, he has also played for three different teams in the independent Frontier League prior to signing with the RedHawks.
