Bay Shuts Down RiverHawks in 4-2 Victory

JOLIET, IL - The JackHammers ended the Memorial Day weekend in style as Bear Bay tossed eight plus innings in a 4-2 victory Sunday night over the RiverHawks at Silver Cross Field. Jon Nelson backed the impressive pitching performance with three hits, including his second home run of the season.

Joliet (6-5) scored first on the Nelson home run in the second inning off Kyle Wright (2-1). The JackHammer outfielder launched the Wright delivery off the scoreboard in left centerfield.

Kevin Rios put Joliet up 4-0 with his second long ball in as many days, connecting on a Wright pitch in the seventh. Roberto Mena led off with a single and moved up to second on a Jorge Rodriguez sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for the Rios home run.

Rockford (6-6) rallied late with two runs in the ninth. Rich Austin drew a lead off walk against Bay (1-2) and Jason James followed with a run scoring double. Griffin Bailey came on and struck out Patrick O'Sullivan for the first out. After Randall Simon reached on a Roberto Mena error, Jake Eigsti singled home the second Rockford run. Bailey shut the door with a strikeout and a fly out to Adam Shorsher and Jono Brooks respectively.

Bay earned the victory with eight great innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Bailey picked up his first save in as many chances, striking out two while allowing one hit.

Wright dropped his first decision after surrendering four runs on ten hits in 6.2 frames.

The JackHammers and RiverHawks continue their four game series with game two tomorrow night at Silver Cross Field. Devin Anderson (0-0) will go up against Kyle Ruwe (0-1). Game time is set for 6:10 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.

Loose Gravel:

- Kevin Rios extended his hitting streak to seven games with the two run home run in the seventh. Rios also has at least one RBI in four straight games and has homered in back-to-back contests

- Freddie Thon singled home Brad Correll for the JackHammers second run in the fifth

- Roberto Mena singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to five games
