Riverdragons Crush Lowgators

January 10, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Columbus Riverdragons News Release

COLUMBUS, Ga., (January 10, 2003) - Sean Daugherty, making his second straight start at power forward in place of the injured Derek Strong, had 15 points and 10 rebounds to notch his first double-double of the season as the Columbus Riverdragons snapped a four-game home losing streak with the victory over the N. Charleston Lowgators at the Columbus Civic Center in NBDL action.

The victory was the Riverdragons first at home since beating the Greenville Groove, 93-81, back on December 22, 2002. Entering tonight's game, Columbus had dropped seven of their first ten contests at the Civic Center this season.

"We needed a win like this," said Riverdragons head coach Jeff Malone. "We're coming together. To leave this building with a 15-20 point win - that certainly was overdue. I know now I can drive home tonight with a smile on my face. Normally I leave here angry but I'm good tonight."

The 25-point margin of victory was the largest in Riverdragons history. The performance marks the first time this season the Riverdragons have scored 100 points in regulation. With the win, the Riverdragons (10-12) improved to 3-1 in 2003.

The Riverdragons established the tempo early going on a 13-2 run over a 3-minute stretch in the middle of the first quarter. Columbus led 49-29 at halftime and would lead by as many as 26 points in the second half before sealing the victory.

Tang Hamilton had 19 points to lead six Riverdragons in double-figures - including all five starters. Recently acquired Shawn Igo was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds over 16 minutes of action off the bench. Daugherty and Igo combined for 10 offensive rebounds as the Riverdragons out-rebounded N. Charleston 48-33 overall.

Corey Benjamin led the Lowgators (11-11) with 27 points, hitting 10-of-20 shots from the floor. Tobe Carberry added 24 ponts knocking down 4-of-6 3-pointers. Benjamin and Carberry were the only two Lowgators to reach double-figures. The Lowgators entered tonight's game leading the league in scoring averaging 89.2 ppg.

The Riverdragons will try to keep their luck at home alive, squaring off with the Greenville Groove Saturday night at the Civic Center. The Lowgators return home to host Huntsville tommorrow night as well.
