RiverDogs to Host Citadel-CofC Throwback Game

April 10, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC -- In a city in which history points to many firsts, another one is coming.

The Charleston RiverDogs, the second-year Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees, will coordinate and promote the April 25 non-conference baseball game between The Citadel and College of Charleston at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. It marks the first time in the Charleston area that a professional organization will coordinate and promote a collegiate baseball game.

The RiverDogs will promote the game as one of its own with their famed "Fun Is Good" approach. The professional baseball club will handle all game operations for the collegiate contest, including the various in-between innings and whacky promotions, giveaways, music, video board and the like. First-pitch is set for 6 p.m.

"We are very excited about hosting this game," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "Both colleges have strong followings and we're hoping the many fans will enjoy the fun that we put in RiverDogs baseball and share that with this exciting college, cross-town rivalry."

Both teams will wear specially-made "throwback" uniforms based on designs from the early 20th century that include lace-up necks and collars. The RiverDogs will distribute replica shirts, based on the uniform design, to the first 1,000 fans (500 Citadel shirts; 500 College of Charleston shirts) that enter the park. Additionally, both squads will use wood bats for this game adding to the authenticity of the "throwback".

Aluminum bats were first introduced to college baseball at the 1974 College World Series when Southern California defeated Miami (FL).
