Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ROME, GA - Newcomer Ricky Surum singled to break up a Rome no-hit bid in the sixth inning, Charleston's only hit in the evening's night cap, as the RiverDogs were swept in a Friday night double-header by finals of 4-1 and 8-1 at State Mutual Stadium.
Right-hander Miguel Yajure (2-2) had a no-hit bid of his own going for Charleston (46-48, 13-13) in game one of the pair of seven-inning contests, setting down the first ten Braves (52-45, 12-16) he faced before Rome rallied for three runs off him in the fourth, all with one out. After an error and a pair of walks, left fielder Jeffrey Ramos cleared the bases with a triple down the left field line. The 20-year-old Venezuelan conceded another run in the fifth and suffered his second straight losing decision. He has now yielded nine runs over his last two starts (8.1 IP).
Charleston was held to just two runs and six hits total between the 14 innings on the day. Game two's loss marked the first time the Baby Bombers' lineup was held to a one-hitter this season as the RiverDogs skidded to their eighth loss in the last nine games.
Infielder Oswaldo Cabrera hit safely in his tenth straight game with an RBI single in the early game to plate Charleston's lone run but lost the streak in game two with a 0-for-2 and reaching base via a walk in the latter contest.
Southpaw John Curtis (1-1) stymied the RiverDogs for five perfect innings in game two before Rome manager Rocket Wheeler turned to the bullpen in the sixth. Right-hander Daysbel Hernandez promptly walked Mitchell Hansen to break up the perfect game before yielding a base hit to Surum two batters later, an at-bat only extended because of a routine pop-up missed by the first baseman Hagen Owenby in foul territory. The Atlanta native, Surum, had just joined the RiverDogs in nearby Rome on Thursday afternoon, finishing 1-for-2 in his first pair of plate appearances as a RiverDog.
Rome backed up their game two starter with an early outburst, first loading up the bases on Jio Orozco (1-3), who exited the first inning with an injury after calling for the trainer. Reliever Daniel Ramos' first two pitches were taken out of the ballpark, a three-run shot by third baseman Jean Carlos Encarnacion and a solo fly by catcher Drew Lugbauer, both the Braves prospects' ninth of the season.
