Riverdogs Open 2007 Season With Eight-Game Homestand

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs open their season Thursday, April 5, against the Greenville Drive for what will be the first of an eight-game homestand at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. After the four-game opening series with the Drive, the RiverDogs will host the Asheville Tourists from Monday to Thursday, April 9-12.

With the exception of a 4:05 p.m. start for the April 8 meeting with Greenville, all games during the home stretch are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.

The "Evil Empire" makes its return to Charleston for a third year, as the RiverDogs are again playing under the affiliation of the New York Yankees. The series marks the RiverDogs' only home games against the Drive, a Boston Red Sox affiliate, and the entertainment will reflect on great moments in the storied Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. Former Boston outfielder Gabe Kapler, a member of the 2004 World Series championship team, will make his managerial debut, as will RiverDogs skipper Torre Tyson.

The RiverDogs will try to better last year's first-game attendance mark of 7,032, which set a Charleston baseball opening-day record.

As always, Riley Park will provide fans with entertainment and festivities during the homestand, starting with a Wild Wing Café Thirsty Thursday presented by 95SX and Nucor Steel on opening night. The evening, which features $1 drink specials, also includes a magnet schedule giveaway and a fireworks finale. Fans will again see sparks Friday evening with Friday Night Fireworks presented by Cricket Wireless and Q104.5. Saturday's game with the Drive consists of a baseball cap giveaway courtesy of My TV Charleston. Family Sunday, sponsored by Charleston County Parks and Recreation, the Charleston IMAX Theatre and WTMA, features The Great Easter Egg Hunt starting an hour prior to the 4:05 p.m. game start. Friday and Saturday's games follow The Citadel baseball games at Riley Park. On Friday and Sunday, the RiverDogs and Drive will play wearing Yankees and Red Sox batting practice jerseys.

Monday, April 9, begins the RiverDogs-Tourist series with Dogs with a Cause featuring the Lutheran Hospice of the Lowcountry, presented by B92. Two for Tuesday, sponsored by Blue Moon and 96 WAVE, features Midget Wrestling after the game. Wednesday's game with Asheville is themed Everybody Night, presented by Beazer Homes and 105.5 FM The Bridge, as A Dog's Life as a SportsCenter Commercial will highlight the evening. The homestand concludes with another Wild Wing Café Thirsty Thursday presented by 95SX in addition to the Grits Roll, sponsored by Quaker Instant Grits.

Charleston built a 10-6 record in 2006 against the Drive, a Boston Red Sox affiliate, with the last meeting coming on Aug. 18 at the end of a four-game series that the teams split in Greenville.

Asheville, a Colorado Rockies affiliate, met Charleston eight times during the 2006 season, with the Tourists taking six of the contests. In their last meeting, the RiverDogs salvaged a four-game home series with a 7-6 victory over the Tourists on July 18.

The RiverDogs hit the road April 13 for an eight-game road trip to play a pair of four-game series with Augusta and Kannapolis. They will return to Charleston April 21 to begin a four-game series with Savannah.
