TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: The tenth of 18 meetings and the sixth of 10 here. Richmond is 6-2-1 vs. the Jackals, 3-0-1 at home. Jay Murphy has eight points vs. the Jackals. Don Smith has 10 vs. Richmond. Jackals have out-scored Richmond 11-6 in the third period. âDogs are 3-37 on the power play vs. Elmira. The âDogs now share first place in the Eastern Conference with Flint. Richmond has two games in hand on the Generals. Elmira is in a fourth place tie with Adirondack in the East, six points back of Richmond. Only six points separate the five Eastern Conference squads. Tonight's match-up features five of the UHL's top 20 scorers. The âDogs are unbeaten in their last five meetings (4-0-1) with the Jackals.
LAST ACTION: The âDogs beat Elmira 5-2 here last night. Richard Pitirri scored two first period goals. Brad Both and Dave Shields each had a goal and assist. David Brosseau added two assists. Maxime Gingras made 32 saves as the Jackals out-shot the âDogs 34-26. The two clubs combined for only 12 PIM.
'DOG BITES: The RiverDogs are unbeaten in their last six home games (4-0-2). They have dropped four straight on the road. The âDogs still lead the UHL in PIM, but have had just 52 total in the last five games. The âDogs and Jackals combined for a Richmond season low 12 PIM last night. Olivier Filion has points in three straight games. The âDogs have gone six straight games without allowing a five-on-four power play goal against. Richmond is 25 for their last 28 on the penalty kill (89.2%) over seven games. The âDogs activated J.F. Picard last night. He had missed the previous six games due to injury. Three RiverDogs are on IR: J.J. Wrobel, Olivier Dannel, and Tyler Lawson. The âDogs are 16-1-3 when scoring first. Richmond is still last in the UHL in power play (14%). Jay Murphy and Kevin St. Jacques are tied for 19th in the league in scoring. Maxime Gingras is fourth in the league in goaltender wins and is tied for third in shutouts. The âDogs are in a stretch of 18 out of 21 games at home.
JACKALS NOTES: The Jackals have three players away on AHL re-call: Mark Jerant (Hershey), Greg Koehler (San Antonio), and Nathan Gillies (Binghamton). Elmira is 2-8 in their last 10 games on the road. Koehler is tied for 11th in points. Don Smith is tied for 14th in scoring and Randy Murphy is 18th. Kris Mallette is second in the UHL in penalty minutes. Peter Aubry is tied for third in shutouts.
AROUND THE UHL: There were three other games in the league last night. Ft. Wayne drilled Adirondack 7-0; Kalamazoo thumped Flint 7-3, and Quad City beat Missouri 4-2. There are four other games tonight: Ft. Wayne at Adirondack, Flint at Kalamazoo, Rockford at Missouri, and Muskegon at Quad City. Port Huron is idle.
NEXT UP: The âDogs host Adirondack Tuesday at 7:05 to conclude a three game homestand. Richmond then hits the road for three straight, starting Wednesday at Adirondack.
