Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Defining symbols of freedom and liberty come in many shapes and sizes. There's the bald eagle soaring in the Pacific Northwest, the Washington Monument towering over the National Mall, and thousands of Americans waving red, white and blue flags during Independence Day parades. Recently, plans have emerged for a new symbol, a $150 million *male* Statue of Liberty to be constructed on Patriot's Point in Mt. Pleasant.
Charleston's deep and storied history serves as the perfect backdrop for such a significant addition to our national landscape. But many in Charleston, including the RiverDogs, want to ensure that the statue represents all men.
As part of their new "Be Your Own Fan" marketing initiative, the RiverDogs are asking all fans to help determine the face, shape and size of the new statue. The "Be Your Own Statue" promotion invites fans to submit a drawing, photograph or video letting the club know who should be the face of this new national monument.
"As Charlestonians and Americans, we can't sit on the sidelines for this one," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "It's our duty to help our city and our nation in choosing the image that will define our region. Personally, I think Charlie the RiverDog would be a friendly and fitting monument protecting our shores, but we welcome everyone to share their ideas."
Fans are encouraged to submit suggestions for the statue's DNA on the RiverDogs' Facebook and Twitter pages with the winner being revealed as part of the "All Things Male" promotional night that is set for Saturday, July 17, when Charleston hosts the Augusta GreenJackets for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
The club will accept photos, videos, drawings or names of citizens that should considered. Fans are encouraged to visit Patriot's Point to make the photos and videos as realistic as possible.
Who knows? The winning entry could be YOU (if you're a male)!
