PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The Arkansas RiverCatz scored the game's final five points in the last 1:10 Friday night to take a 113-109 victory over the Mississippi Miracles in an American Basketball Association (ABA) contest played at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.
Down 109-108 with 1:10 the RiverCatz (2-0) got a baby hook in the lane from Kareem Reid and three John Grice free throws to put away the Miracles (1-1). The RiverCatz benefited further on Grice's attempts by way of the seventh personal foul on Mississippi's Tyrone Davis. After Grice's third attempt with 34 seconds left, the RiverCatz regained possession, as by the ABA rules, and ran a majority of the game clock down, leaving the Miracles with little time to score again.
Reid and Grice were the catalysts for the RiverCatz, who now face their sister team, the 3-0 Aeros, on Sunday in a battle of unbeatens at the All-Star Sports Arena in Springdale. Grice led Arkansas with 33 points while pulling down 18 rebounds. Reid, meanwhile, remained the team's offensive catalyst by dishing out a game-high 17 assists to go with a 24-point scoring effort.
Mississippi was led by David Haywood's 35 points and Detrick White's 32.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
