Rivera And Wren Homer In 10-5 Loss
Sky Sox record 10 hits in series-opening defeat.
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.-Yadiel Rivera and Kyle Wren each drove in a pair of runs, but El Paso took game one of the four-game series, 10-5, in front of 6,170 at Southwest University Field Monday night.
The Sky Sox (21-12) took an early lead in the second inning. With one out, Rivera clubbed his second home run of the season to the berm in left-centerfield, driving in Brett Phillips and producing his 11th and 12th RBIs of the season. The long ball was Rivera's first on the road and first since April 8 against Omaha at Security Service Field.
Colorado Springs got back on the scoreboard with two more runs in the eighth inning. Wren led off the inning by recording his first home run of the season on a solo shot to centerfield off El Paso (18-20) reliever Andre Rienzo.
Later in the eighth inning, Ryan Cordell-who extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the sixth inning-grounded out third base, scoring Ivan De Jesus and cutting the Chihuaha margin to six runs. One inning later, Wren singled in the ninth inning off Phil Maton III, scoring Nate Orf and recording a two-hit, two-RBI game.
Colorado Springs and El Paso continue their four-game series at 6:35 p.m. MT Tuesday night. RHP Michael Blazek (0-0, 2.25) makes his second start of the season and squares off against Chihuahua RHP Matt Magill (2-3, 3.40).
