Missouri River Otters News Release
St. Charles, MO --- The Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League agreed to terms with defensemen Jared Newman, a fourth round NHL draft pick in 2000, and Mark Lindsay, who played with the Port Huron Beacons in 2004-05.
Newman, 23, was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. During the 2003-04 campaign, the 6'2'', 205-lb blue-liner played 8 games with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL. He's spent the majority of the last three seasons with the Florida Everblades, helping propel them to the ECHL finals in 2004 and 2005. His most productive professional stint came in 2003-04 with Florida, when he scored 2 goals, added 7 assists, and piled up 87 penalty minutes in 42 regular season games. In the 2003-04 postseason, he scored 5 points in 17 games for the ECHL finalist Everblades. The Michigan-native played four years of Canadian Major Junior hockey with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL.
"Jared will help solidify our defense corps," River Otters Head Coach Kevin Kaminski said. "He has a tremendous amount of upside and could be a huge contributor both offensively and defensively."
Lindsay, 20, spent his first professional season with the UHL's Port Huron Beacons, compiling three goals and five assists in 40 games. The 6'0'', 195-lb defenseman's most successful campaign came in 2003-04, when he racked up six goals, 26 assists, and 113 penalty minutes in 48 games with the South Surrey Eagles of the amateur BCHL. The British Columbia-native was even more impressive in the postseason for the Eagles, recording 17 points in 13 games. He spent three years, 2000-2003, in the Canadian Major Juniors playing with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL.
"Mark impressed us last season in Port Huron," Kaminski said. "He's a young kid who should be able to help us out offensively and also do a good job in the defensive zone."
