River Otters Defeat Mechanics 4-0 as Tapp Nets Second Straight Shutout

October 24, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Missouri River Otters News Release

Jason Tapp recorded his second consecutive shutout and Lars Pettersen scored two goals as the Missouri River Otters blanked the Motor City Mechanics 4-0 Sunday at the Family Arena.

The scoring started with great puck movement from the Otters on the power play. Riku Varjamo played the puck from the point to Jim Montgomery at the left faceoff circle, and the Otters center blasted a slap shot past Mechanics goalie Rod Branch.

The second period was dominated by Pettersen. Ten minutes in, Barrie Moore flipped a shot in front of the net from the point and Pettersen put a picture perfect deflection top shelf to extend the lead to two. Six minutes later Pettersen struck again with a phenomenal individual effort. Taking a pass from Justin Quenneville, he fired a high shot that Branch couldn't control. The puck popped down to the right of the Mechanics goaltender, and Pettersen came around the net, picked up the loose puck, and roofed it for his second goal of the period.

The lone goal in the third period came of the stick of Quenneville. The rookie winger got the puck right from the faceoff and whipped a shot that beat Branch high to the glove side.

Tapp made 16 saves for his second consecutive shutout and third consecutive victory. The River Otters next game is set for Friday, October 29 against the Quad City Mallards at 7:30 at the Family Arena.
