San Diego Riptide News Release

The 2004 San Diego Riptide took their first steps toward the ArenaCup this week, holding their first practices of the season on Wednesday and Thursday at the Sports Arena.

With 32 players in camp and the looming March 29th deadline for rosters to be cut down to 19 active players, the players know that they'll have to make the most of their chances to impress new head coach Mouse Davis and his staff over the next few weeks.

"Whether you were here last year or you're new to the team, you've got to come into camp and work hard if you want a spot on the team," said offensive and defensive lineman Brad Greetis, who is returning for his third season with the Riptide. "We've got a lot of talented guys out here though, so it should definitely be a great season for us."

Thursday's practice at the Sports Arena also served as the Riptide's 2004 Open House. Fans, media and sponsors all were invited to watch practice, talk to players and coaches and snap a few pictures before getting a chance to toss around the football on the field, themselves, after practice concluded.

"It was a great night," said Riptide general manager Gil Saidy. "The fans got to come out and meet some of the new guys in camp, talk to Mouse and get an early start on all the excitement of the upcoming season. We're looking forward to getting started for real on Apr. 3."

The free event gave fans a chance to watch the entire practice and, during a short break at the midpoint of the action, fans were able to come onto the field and chat with players while getting autographs and pictures. The night also featured the first performance of the season by the 2004 Riptide Dance Team.

With plenty of Riptide staff on hand, fans also had a chance to select their seats for the 2004 season by checking out the views from all over the Sports Arena, then simply grabbing tickets off of the seats they liked. Fans who couldn't make it out for the open house can still purchase their tickets now by calling the Riptide offices at 866-RIPTIDE.

The Riptide will open their third season in Little Rock, Ark. on Apr. 3 vs. the Arkansas Twisters and will kick off their home schedule on Friday, Apr. 9 against the Green Bay Blizzard.
