Central Valley Coyotes News Release
On Saturday, March 27, the Central Valley Coyotes and the Selland Arena will welcome three-time Super Bowl Champion, Bill Walsh to the home opener. Walsh will honor around four hundred local prep standouts and their coaches during halftime, to correspond with the theme of, "A Night of Champions."
"We're trying to open up this 2004 season with a bang," said Coyotes Operator George Chung. "We are honoring the talented youth of the Central Valley, which is also the future as well. We are very proud to have Bill come down to Fresno and honor these young athletes of the Central Valley."
Bill Walsh, the man who took over a losing San Francisco 49ers team in 1979 and built it into the most successful NFL franchise over the last two decades, has provided his knowledge, experience and eye for talent to the 49ers as a Consultant after stepping down as Vice President/General Manager May 2, 2001.
Walsh was at the helm of one of the greatest success stories in the history of professional sports. In 1979, he took over a team that went 2-14 the previous season and transformed it into a Super Bowl champion in just three seasons.
Under Walsh's direction, the 49ers won three Super Bowl titles (1981, '84 and '88), made seven NFC postseason appearances and claimed six NFC West division championships. He was twice named NFL Coach-of-the-Year (1981, 1984) and was later named NFL Coach-of-the-Decade for the 1980s.
Walsh became one of only 14 coaches in the history of professional football to be elected to the Hall of Fame, when he was enshrined in 1993. He compiled a .617 winning percentage with a 102-63-1 career record that included 10 wins in 14 postseason games. He was the first coach in team history to reach the 100-win plateau.
Fan's will have an opportunity to enjoy the hard hitting action of arenafootball2 as the Coyotes kickoff their 2004 season on March 27. The Coyotes will square off against the 2003 West Division Champion Hawaiian Islanders. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
