San Diego Riptide News Release

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Riptide will join the fight against breast cancer when they team up with the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the first-ever Breast Cancer Awareness Night at the Sports Arena, when the ‘Tide take on the Hawaiian Islanders on May 8.

The first 2,000 fans will be treated to free brats, courtesy of Johnsonville Brats and the Clever Cleaver Brothers. Brats will be served in the Sports Arena V.I.P. parking lot before the game. The Clever Cleaver Brothers are Lee N. Gerovitz and Steve Cassarino - professional chefs who have turned their love for food and laughter into a unique career as media personalities, cookbook authors and stand-up chefs. Working without fancy equipment, costly pots and pans, or gourmet gadgets, Lee and Steve are known, not just for their simple recipes and lighthearted style, but also for their outlandish costumes. Expect to see them dressed as prehistoric cavemen as they turn barbecuing into a whole new experience!

Fans can also click on this link to download a coupon that they can use at the Sports Arena box office to have 50 percent of their ticket cost donated to the fight against breast cancer.

The number of new cases of breast cancer has increased by about one percent per year in the United States since about the 1940's and has only recently shown signs of leveling off. An estimated 216,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women in 2004 alone. For more than 20 years, however, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has been a global leader in the fight against breast cancer through its support of innovative research and community-based outreach programs. Working through a network of U.S. and international Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, the Komen Foundation is fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by funding research grants and supporting education, screening and treatment projects in communities around the world. Fans can find out more about the Komen Foundation by going to www.komen.org.

The Riptide's game against the first-place Islanders kicks off at the Sports Arena at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 8. Fans can purchase their tickets at Ticketmaster On-line, but are encouraged to print out the voucher by clicking here, and returning it to the Sports Arena Box Office. In addition to the free brats, the first 3,000 fans will also receive free Riptide long-sleeve t-shirts, courtesy of Channel 4 San Diego.
