New England Riptide News Release
Rockford, Ill- Two rookie pitcher locked up in a pitchers duel in Rockford on Saturday night. Thunder rookie Abbie Simms battled Riptide starter, Eileen Canney, making her professional start, having ended her college career at the World Series just last week.
Neither team could muster must offense for the regulation seven innings. The Riptide had only four hits and the Thunder only one hit off Canney, that being a second inning single by Kim Wedland. In the eight Serena Settlemeir came in to relieve Simms. She pitched through the eighth, however in the ninth she ran into trouble due to miscues by the defense. With one out, speedy Shanel Scott reached on the first of two errors by the Thunder, this one when Audrey Rendon booted a ball at third. That brought up Carri Martin, who had three of the Riptide's six hits, and she got her most clutch one here, a double to left center easily scoring Scott. The Thunder were not done helping the Riptide, this time, when Wedland dropped a routine put out on a Jackie Pasquerella ground ball. That brought up Lyndsey Angus who put the game out of reach with a double to score Martin and Pasquerella. Then it was up to Canney, and although she gave up a lead off single to Lindsay Gardner, only the second of the night, when struck out MacKenzie Vandergeist and Amanda Freed before Wedland popped out to Pasquerella to end the game.
Eileen Canney was nothing less than brilliant in her first start. She struck out 13, walked three and had the Thunder hitters hitting mostly harmless pop ups when not striking out. The Riptide finish their series with the Thunder at 3:05 CST on Sunday and return for their home opener against Team Venezuela on Thursday. That night will feature the Riptide championship ring ceremony with the rings and Cowles Cup being presented by Mayor William Martin at 6:45.
