Philadelphia Force News Release

Allentown, Pa.- Every Friday this season, the Philadelphia Force will honor a local treasure. This week's local treasure was Veronica "Ronnie" Maurek, honored during the June 8th National Pro Fastpitch game between the Philadelphia Force and Washington Glory. Maurek is an All-American softball player who works with the softball division of Longstreth Women's Sports. Maurek has participated in softball over the decades as a player, coach and a mentor.

Maurek competed at women's major fastpitch level from 1961-1982 and led multiple ASA teams to state and regional championships. Her teams never missed qualifying for the national championship. She played shortstop and second base, and throughout her career, her batting average was never below .340. Maurek was a two-time ASA Women's Major All-American in 1969 and 1971. When she played professionally with the Pennsylvania Liberties in 1976, Maurek led the team in hitting and was the team captain.

Maurek's love for softball continued into coaching when she started a softball program at Temple University in 1974 where she became one of the first full-time coaches in Temple history as well as coaching the women's basketball team from 1974-1978. She amassed 300 wins during 17 seasons as the Temple head softball coach, highest among all Temple softball coaches. Her accolades include multiple Atlantic 10 regular season titles and an Atlantic 10 tournament championship in 1990. Maurek received Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors in 1989.

In her business career, Maurek established the softball division of Longstreth Women's Sports in 1991. She has organized numerous softball clinics in Pennsylvania that also included appearances by Olympic Gold Medalists Lisa Fernandez, Stacey Neuzman, and Dot Richardson. This August, Cat Ostermen will visit the Longstreth retail location.

Maurek has received many honors throughout her career whether as a player, a coach or a businesswoman. She was inducted into the Lehigh Valley Softball and Basketball Hall of Fame as well as the Philadelphia ASA Softball Hall of Fame. Other honors include Allentown Central Catholic, East Stroudsburg University Athletics Hall of Fame and most recently the Pennsylvania ASA Hall of Fame.
