Rockford Thunder News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. - After beginning the season with seven straight victories, the Thunder has now lost two straight games, including tonight's game to the New England Riptide 3-0.
Both teams sent rookie pitchers to the circle, with Abbie Sims going for the Thunder (7-2) and Eileen Canney working for the Riptide (3-4). The two youngsters went back and forth, exchanging zeros on the scoreboard for the first seven innings of play.
The eighth inning was much of the same with neither team finding a way to push across a run. This time it was Serena Settlemier in the circle for Rockford. Settlemier, who took the loss last night, did her job in the ninth as well, but two big errors by the defense led to three unearned runs.
In the top of the ninth inning with one out pinch-hitter Shanel Scott reached on an error by third baseman Audrey Rendon. She stole second and came in to score on an RBI double from Carri Leto-Martin. Martin finished the game with three of the Riptide's six hits. Martin would come in to score on the next play when Kim Wendland committed her second error of the game allowing Jackie Pasquerella to reach and Leto-Martin to score from second base. Lindsay Angus would finish off the scoring with an RBI single to left field.
Canney, who played her college ball down the road at Northwestern, was very impressive in her first professional start. She went all nine innings for New England, allowing just two hits and striking out 13.
Rockford will look to get back on the winning end of things tomorrow afternoon when they send Cat Osterman to the circle. Osterman is 1-0 on the season with a 0.00 ERA. This will be her second start.
Game time for Sunday is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CDT. Great tickets are still available by visiting www.etix.com or by purchasing them at the gate.
The Thunder will be back in action on Tuesday night for game one of a two-game series Team Venezuela.
