San Diego Riptide News Release

SAN DIEGO – The Riptide were assigned Marvin Owens (DS) to their 2005 training camp roster yesterday. Last year, he played his first season in the af2 for the Manchester Wolves, leading the team in nearly every defensive category.

“(Owens) is one of the better DS’s in the league,” said Coach. “He will add a lot to our defense.”

OwensÂ’ defensive ability is undeniably unstoppable. While playing in his first season with the Wolves, he recorded 76 tackles, batted down 16 balls, and made five interceptions. All three stats were team highs. During a match up against the Albany Conquest, he was honored as ADT Defensive Player of the Game after recording four tackles, two interceptions, and two pass deflections. In addition to his defensive capabilities, Owens also caught 10 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown and returned four kickoffs for 17 yards.

Previous to his af2 debut, he played two years in the National Indoor Football League with the Oklahoma Crude. In his two seasons, he intercepted nine passes. He also attended Butte Junior College in California.

The Riptide recruiting spree continues through the off season. San Diego will host its second open tryout on February 5. Look for high-caliber players to fill the remaining spots on the 2005 training camp roster.
