Alexandria Aces News Release
Alexandria, LA - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored 11 runs in the final four innings against six Alexandria pitchers Friday, blowing out the Aces 15-4 at Bringhurst Field.
First baseman Scott Jay led the way with a 3-for-6 performance and 3 RBI, while catcher Casey Clary hit a late grand slam and finished 2-for-5. Brothers Juan and Ramon Downing had two hits apiece, as seven WhiteWings had multiple hits. Righthander Danny Bonilla (1-0) worked seven strong innings to earn the victory, allowing just five hits and two runs.
The game was a tense affair until the seventh inning. Rio Grande Valley took an early 2-0 lead against Aces starter Brian Martin (1-3) in the second inning. The Aces fought back to tie the game in the third inning. Erick Mejias walked to open the frame, stole second, and scored on a Keto Anderson single. Anderson came around to score on a double-play groundout.
But the WhiteWings got to Martin in the sixth. He walked Mejias, the No. 9 hitter, to lead off the inning. After a single by Jay and a sacrifice fly by Juan Downing made it 3-2, Martin was pulled in favor of Luis Rodriguez. He allowed an unearned run to score to make it a 4-2 game.
Rio Grande really pulled away with a seven-run seventh inning in which 11 WhiteWings batted and seven consecutive hitters reached base at one point. Clary punctuated the inning with a grand slam to left field.
The series continues Saturday and Sunday at Bringhurst Field, with Aces righty Santo Hernandez starting Saturday against WhiteWing righty Peter Henyan. For more information, call 473-ACES or log on to www.myacesbaseball.com.
