Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Darren Rowe scored at 2:55 of overtime to give the host RoughRiders a wild 5-4 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers Saturday night.

Rowe ripped the game winner home from the right wing circle. The Buccaneers had rallied from a 3-0 deficit and come within seconds of winning in regulation before the Riders' Scott Winkler delivered a late equalizer.

The Riders had pulled goaltender Troy Grosenick with 1:24 left in the third period and then gone on the power play with just 35 seconds left to create a 6-on-4 advantage and set the stage for Winkler to score the tying goal off a goalmouth scramble with just 17.8 seconds remaining. .

The Riders were in need of Winkler's late heroics after being bombarded by four straight Buc goals. Rocco Carzo triggered the onslaught by scoring the first Des Moines goal of the night from the right wing circle at 17:11 of the second period.

At 3:12 of the third period the Buccaneers were shorthanded when Josh Balch converted a breakaway to cut the gap to 3-2.

It was the Bucs who were on the man advantage when Carzo turned a rebound into the tying goal- his second of the night- at 13:07 of the third.

Just 54 seconds later Des Moines remarkably took the lead for the first time when Ryan Walters buried Balch's centering pass.

It was to the Bucs' great credit that they were able to turn the game around despite being out-chanced throughout the evening. The Riders opened the scoring at 5:42 of the first period when Brett Gensler drove a Nick Oddo feed home from close range.

At 9:42 of the second period the Robin Bergman blasted in the Riders' second goal from the right wing circle.

Paul Philllips pounced on a rebound to make it 3-0 at 13:47 of the third, but as comfortable as that lead seemed, the Riders, who would go on to outshoot the Buccaneers 52-25 on the night, would be pushed to the limit before finally securing the win.
