Rickwood Wins Fan Vote
February 20, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
HOOVER, AL - The fans on milb.com recently named The Rickwood Classic as the most desirable minor league baseball game to attend in 2009. Competing against The All-Star Futures game at Busch Stadium (32% of the vote), The Futures at Fenway (19%) and The Road to Wrigley (11%), The Rickwood Classic earned 38% of the vote to take home the honor.
The 14th annual Rickwood Classic will be held at historic Rickwood Field on Wednesday, May 27. The Barons will take on the Southern League defending champion and division rival Mississippi Braves, and the event will once again be sponsored by State Farm.
As always, there will be a historical theme for this "turn back the clock" event, as the two teams will be paying homage to the 1982 season. That year, the Atlanta Braves traveled to Rickwood Field to play a mid-summer exhibition game against the Southern League All-Stars. The first 1,500 fans through the turnstiles will receive a commemorative "big ticket" that replicates the ducats sold for the 1982 exhibition.
In tune with the game's theme, the M-Braves will feature the powder blue uniforms worn by Atlanta in the early '80s, and the Barons will sport the uniforms worn by their team during part of that decade, which were primarily white with red and black trim.
In addition to the Rickwood Classic, Rickwood Field will also play host to the Southern League Home Run Derby and Celebrity Softball game Presented by Virginia College on Monday, July 13. The event will be a part of the Southern League All-Star Game festivities leading up to the All-Star Game at Regions Park on Tuesday, July 14.
Birmingham will welcome the Chattanooga Lookouts, Class AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, to Regions Park for its season opener on April 9, 2009. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
