TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Game Two of the best of five Colonial Cup Eastern Conference Semi-finals. The Jackals lead the series one game to none after winning here Wednesday. The âDogs were the regular season conference champions with 93 points, seven ahead of Flint. The Jackals finished fourth with 75 points.
GAME ONE: The âDogs grabbed a 2-1 first period lead on goals by J.J. Wrobel and Kevin St. Jacques. The Jackals rallied to take the lead on a pair of power play goals in the first 2:08 of the second period. Elmira added three more second period goals to blow the game open. J.F. Boutin and Eddy Lowe scored two goals for Elmira. Boutin, Jamie Thompson, and Trevor Burgess enjoyed three point nights. The Jackals were 4-7 on the power play and scored a shorthanded goal. Richmond was 0-7 on the man advantage. The âDogs out-shot the Jackals 32-28. Peter Aubry made 30 saves.
SERIES NOTES: The âDogs were 11-4-3 vs. the Jackals, 7-1-2 at home. The âDogs out-scored the Jackals 56-50 in the 18 game season series. Six meetings went to shootouts. Each club won three. The Jackals out-scored the âDogs 19-12 in the third period. Elmira out-scored Richmond by eight on special teams. Elmira had 28 more power play chances in the season series. David Brosseau was the âDogs leading scorer vs. the Jackals with 22 points. Don Smith led the Jackals with 17 vs. the âDogs. Maxime Gingras had three shutouts vs. the Jackals. Peter Aubry blanked the âDogs twice. All five shutouts occurred on the winning club's home ice. Nine of the 18 games were decided by one goal.
âDOG BITES: The five goals scored by Elmira in the second period equaled the most the âDogs allowed in a period during the regular season. Richmond lost only one game all year when leading after one period. 10 members of the âDogs playoff roster have won pro championships. The âDogs roster also includes two NCAA championships and a Memorial Cup. The six goals scored by the Jackals in Game One is the most in the Colonial Cup playoffs thus far. Elmira's four power play goals leads the UHL in the post-season. Wednesday's Game One is the only game in the playoffs decided by more than one goal.
AROUND THE UHL: There was one game in the Colonial Cup playoffs last night. Kalamazoo beat Ft. Wayne 3-2 in Game One of their series. The Wings are the first home team to win in the playoffs this year. Tonight Muskegon is at Quad City (Fury leads the series 1-0); and Flint is at Port Huron (Beacons lead the series 2-0). The Kalamazoo-Ft. Wayne series is off until Monday.
NEXT UP: The âDogs visit Elmira tomorrow night at 7:35 (7:20 www.riverdogshockey.com). Game Four, if necessary, is Sunday in Elmira at 7 PM. If the series goes to Game Five it is Wednesday in Richmond at 7:35.
