Richmond Kickers Clinch Playoff Berth

RICHMOND, VA – (Monday, August 23, 2004) – The results of last weekend's match versus the Toronto Lynx secures a playoff berth for the Richmond Kickers (16-8-3, 51 points) and guarantees Richmond no less than a second place finish in the Eastern Conference. The Kickers will host a 2004 Eastern Conference Semi-final at the University of Richmond Stadium on Friday, September 3, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. and could face Atlanta, Rochester or Syracuse.

After a scoreless first half in Toronto, Richmond's rookie forward McColm Cephas tallied the game-winning goal in the 64th minute. Kickers veteran Kevin Jeffrey faked a shot, passing the ball to a wide-open Cephas who took advantage of the opportunity, securing the playoff spot. Taking over as Kickers leading scorer, Cephas has recorded nine goals and four assists for 22 points.

With one week remaining in the regular season, the Montreal Impact has also clinched a playoff berth with Atlanta, Rochester and Syracuse battling for the final two qualifying spots. The top four teams in each conference will qualify for the playoffs. All playoff rounds will be two-legged aggregate score series with the exception of the A-League Championship, which will be a single match pitting the two Conference Champions with the Host determined on a bid basis. Conference Semi-Finals - Friday, September 3rd and Sunday, September 5th

1 - Eastern Conference - #1 seed vs. #4 seed

2 - Eastern Conference - #2 seed vs. #3 seed

3 - Western Conference - #1 seed vs. #4 seed

4 - Western Conference - #2 seed vs. #3 seed

Higher seed has the option of choosing to host first or second match.

Conference Finals - Friday, September 10th and Sunday, September 12th

5 - Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner

6 - Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 winner

Higher seed has the option of choosing to host first or second match.

A-League Championship - Saturday, September 18th
