TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Altoona Curve will meet in game two of a three-game series...After falling behind the Flying Squirrels 1-0, the Curve scored seven runs in a five-inning span including four in the eighth to claim the series opener 7-2 on Friday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander David Mixon gets the start in game of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Earned the win in his last outing at Reading 6/14...Allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings plus two batters...Struck out one and walked two...Gave up one of the two runs and four of the eight hits in the second inning..Allowed two more hits and a run in the eighth inning...Recorded 11 ground outs including two double plays and also seven fly outs...Threw 89 pitches, 58 strikes...Went three balls in the count to just three of the 30 batters he faced...Eight hits allowed for the second consecutive start matched both season and career highs...Worked seven innings for the fifth time and matched a season and career high...Has gone six innings or more in eight of his 13 starts including each of his last four...Is 7-1 when going six innings or more...Ranks third among starters in the Eastern League in fewest base runners per nine innings at 10.25 (90/79.0 IP) and is third overall in WHIP (1.06)...Is fifth in the Eastern League in strike outs (63), is sixth in innings pitched (79.0), and is eighth in ERA (3.08).
Left-hander Justin Wilson gets the nod in game two of the series for the Curve...Received a no-decision after allowing four runs on a season-high 10 hits in six innings...Struck out two batters and walked none...Had earned the win in each of his previous four starts 5/23-6/8...Had allowed just six runs, three earned, on 10 hits in 22 2/3 innings (1.19 ERA) during the winning streak...Struck out 27 batters and walked 11...Has allowed three runs or fewer in nine of his 12 starts this season...Ranks third in the Eastern League in batting average against (.213), is tied for sixth in strike outs (61) and is seventh in ERA (3.02)...Went 6-8 with a 4.50 ERA in 26 starts with Advanced-A Lynchburg in 2009...Struck out 94 and walked 55 in 116 innings of work...Allowed 118 hits (.262 OBA) including 14 home runs...Won Carolina League Championship...Selected by Pittsburgh in the fifth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Fresno State University...Won the 2008 College World Series.
ALL DRIED UP: With a loss tonight, the Flying Squirrels would match their low-water mark of the season at five games under .500...Richmond has not been five games under since being 1-6 following a three-game sweep at Altoona 4/14.
BEHIND THE CURVE: The Flying Squirrels were 22-13 and had a 1 1/2 game lead in the Western Division through the first 35 games; however, the club is 10-23 (.303) over its last 33 games...Only the Erie SeaWolves have fared worse over that span going 9-22 (.290) following their first 35 games.
BULLIED PEN: The Flying Squirrels' bullpen allowed four more runs last night and has given up 11 runs over the first four games of the homestand...Since 5/14, the bullpen's ERA has climbed from 2.28 to 3.86...Flying Squirrel relievers have given up 83 runs over their last 122 innings of work (6.12 ERA) spanning the club's last 33 games...Richmond's overall staff ERA is 5.59 over its last 33 games, and the club's ERA has climbed from 2.58 to 3.67 over that span.
SERIE-OUS SKID: Richmond is 1-7-2 over its last 10 series from 5/13-6/17 after dropping two out of three games against Binghamton...The lone series win for the Flying Squirrels came against New Britain 6/8-6/10 when the club took two of three games...Prior to the skid, Richmond had gone 6-1-1 over its previous eight series spanning from 4/15-5/2.
CLAY-MATION: Outfielder Clay Timpner went 2-for-4 last night with a double and a run scored...It was his 11th multi-hit game of the season and his first since 5/28 against Bowie...The 27-year-old was 8-for-56 (.143) over the 19-game stretch between his multi-hit performances...His average has dipped from .374 to .299 since 5/28.
BRIGHT BLUE SKYLER: Super utility man Skyler Stromsmoe went 2-for-4 last night including a pair of RBI...It was his first multi-RBI game this season...Since coming off of the Disabled List 6/5, the 26-year-old is batting .349 (15-for-43) in 11 games, and he has hits in nine of the 11 contests...Stromsmoe hit .286 (6-for-20) in nine games prior to landing on the DL with a left shoulder separation 5/6.
OUT OF ORDER: Outfielder Thomas Neal missed a game for the first time this season after sitting out last night's series opener with Altoona...The 22-year-old had previously appeared in each of the club's first 67 contests.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 85 double plays in 68 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning a double play.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: The Flying Squirrels have been outhit in the first four games of their current six-game homestand...Binghamton and Altoona have combined to outhit Richmond 47-28 over the past four games...The club is 3-28 when it is outhit by its opponent.
