Richmond Raiders News Release
Alabama (2-8) took the lead on the opening kickoff when Hammers kicker Jaime Whitworth put the ball through the uprights for an uno. The Hammers held that 1-0 lead for almost nine minutes, but once it was relinquished, they never got it back. With 6:10 left in the first quarter, Richmond QB Antwon Young tossed a five yard touchdown pass to WR Herb Jones. T.C. Stevens' PAT kick was good, and the score was 7-1 Raiders. From there Richmond (8-2) never looked back, surging ahead by as many as 19 points midway through the second quarter.
The Hammers came alive, however, as halftime approached, scoring a field goal and a touchdown to enter the locker room with 26 points on the board to Richmond's 32. Another touchdown on the Hammers' first possession in the third quarter brought them within one point of a tie (33 to 34).
Then Young tossed a 32 yard pass to Raider WR Jason Lovett, and kicker T. C. Stevens added the extra point and an uno on the ensuing kickoff the make the score 42-33 Raiders. Still, the Hammers weren't done. Alabama QB Tony Colson threw a five yard touchdown pass to WR Thomas Harris at the start of the fourth quarter to pull within two points, 42-40.
Unfortunately for Alabama their defense couldn't hold. Raiders QB Antwon Young scored on a two yard run, fullback Jordan Pavlison scampered 17 years for another score, and kicker T. C. Stevens added the extra points and a second uno for good measure to make the final score to 57 to 40.
With this win Richmond has clinched a home playoff game, to be played on Monday night, June 25, at the Richmond Coliseum. The Raiders have two games to play before then, away at Knoxville, June 9, and home against Albany, June 16.
The game against Albany should be a big one. Both teams are now 8-2 following Albany's loss on Saturday evening to Knoxville. The game should be big because whichever team enters the playoffs as the number one seed will host the League championship game if that team is in the final. So the game between Richmond and Albany, now the top two teams in the Professional Indoor Football League, could be significant indeed.
